Kujirtai Formation

Kujirtai Fm

Period:
Permian

Age Interval:
P (2), mid-Middle Permian

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at Kujirtai about 10 km to the northeast of Tuoli County, Xinjiang. It was named by the Xinjiang Regional Geological Survey Party in 1975, and was cited officially by the Compiling Group on the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of the Xinjiang Utgur Autonomous Region (1981).

Lithology and Thickness

Conglomerate. The rocks in the type section represent mainly variegated thick-bedded conglomerates, pebbles of which are largely from intermediate-acidic volcanic rocks. Thickness is over 1500 m

Lithology Pattern:
Conglomerate

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Disconformable contact with the intermediate-acidic volcanic rocks of the underlying Molaoba Fm.

Upper contact

None given

Regional extent

In the Arxilie area to the southwest of Tuoli County Town the formation is unconformably overlapping the Baogutu Fm of the Early Carboniferous, representing river-lake facies deposits. Lower part of the formation represents a rhythmite of grey-green siltstone, sandstone and conglomerate, intercalated with many layers of thin coal seams, with a thickness of about 500 m. Upper part of the formation consists of grey-green conglomerate, intercalated with medium- and coarse-grained sandstones, as well as siltstone and volcanic-rock lenses, with a thickness of about 1500 m, yielding plant fossils (phytolites) which comprise Noeggerathiopsis derzavinii, Pecopteris anthriscifolia, Koretrophyllites linearis, Callipteris zeilleri, Xinjiangopteris toksunensis, etc., that are closer to those found in the Lucaogou Fm and Hongyanchi Fm on the southern margin of the Jungghariya. In the area of Liushugou at Tuoli the exposure of the formation consisting of sandy conglomerate is incomplete. It is distributed also in the lower reaches of the Karabula River, as well as in the northern part of Tacheng County. The thickness of the formation is only 83 m in the area of Qiargaye River and other places in the Burkerstai region.
